:Well i'm here to tell you that honing the pin bores for an aftermarket application build is very vital. And who are you again? Why should I take your word over the piston manufacturer's recommendation? You suggested I contact the manufacturer, thinking they would back up your assertion that the pin bores must always be honed. Apparently you are not 100% correct. You've placed yourself on quite the pedestal, and I'm not entirely sure it is warranted.
Pardon my skepticism, but I've run across too many hack engine builders that take it upon themselves to do the customer a "favor" and deviate from recommended clearances, many times with poor results. Did you happen to explain to the individual you were speaking to what abuse the engine will see and the type of power and so forth you will make? No, I did not. If it was as vital as you claim, I would suspect that he would have asked about it, and there would also be some mention about it in the piston installation instructions. :No matter what engine you build or have built...the pin bores on the pistons/rods need to be honed. It seems odd that the piston manufacturer disagrees with you on this, but whatever.
From F1 to Top Fuel every detail is examined and improved upon. Every engine I worked on and machined parts for while working at my previous employer has honed piston pin bores. The engines run so much smoother and better this way. You can't measure "smoother and better" between two engines, one with honed pin bores, one without. Therefore, this claim is subjective, and essentially meaningless.
"Thats like AMS saying "its close enough"...I don't buy it."
:It is your choice in what you want to do with your builds...but mine get the utmost attention to everything. That's cool, nothing wrong with that. I'm just not a fan of deviating from recommended clearances unless there is a damn good reason. Your saying that it is vital that pin bores must always be honed is simply incorrect. It may be warranted in some instances, but certainly not all. Cheap insurance for a longevity purpose. I hear Kuah is having bearing problems again, and is building another motor. *Shrug*
